We settled in the nice city of Wadsworth, Ohio, just west of Akron, 30+ years ago. Every time the need for a new major appliance came, we did the usual shopping at the national stores that boast great savings. Guess what? The local appliance stores won our business with great service and, a surprisingly competitive price. So what if the price is few bucks more, you may get a haul-away for free.
I bet that there is a store that you drove by many a time and wondered what it was about. Well, you have some money that was given to you to spend. Go in, enjoy looking around, chatting with the staff and spend a few bucks.
The result of your exercise of spending the few dollars with the local stores will be keeping that money in town. The purchases will support the owners and employees. The local taxes they pay go to running the services from the community and the schools. It'll multiply your tax dollars.
Just think of the economic boost to the community if everyone spent just $50 of the stimulus package in his town and neighborhood. Best of all, chances are you will return to buy again when you discover there are some wonderful people with great products, waiting to serve you.
Encourage your family, friends and neighbors to do likewise. Get a grass roots movement going.
I must admit that this is not my original idea, A lady from Rittman, Ohio wrote a letter to the editor in The Wadsworth Post. Of course she suggested folk stay out of the big boxes, and Wadsworth, and encouraged spending their checks in Rittman. I think she is on to something.
