Avenues to Success Subscription Acknowledgment

When we start a new enrollee, we send a "Welcome to Avenues to Success" message along with the motivational quotation for the day. In the e-mail, we let the person know who is giving him or her the subscription and why. Here is a sample of this e-mail:

Dear Samantha,

Your Avenues To Success subscription is a gift from your parents as a way to help you succeed at Ashland University.

Our goal is to provide you with a daily quotation that will help motivate you and keep you focused on your goals. The Avenues include, but are not limited to: Integrity, Persistence, Courage, Honor, Leadership and Personal Relationships.

This is a paid subscription which benefits Ashland University Parents Association. As such, you will not receive any unsolicited e-mail from us. Avenues to Success provides a fund-raising opportunity for only bona fide colleges and universities.

If you want to change your e-mail address, let us know as soon as possible so you can continue receiving the daily messages.

Also, If you use a spam filter on your email, please be sure to include avenuests(at)wadsnet(dot)com in your allowed email addresses.

What is an Avenue to Success?

As we use it, an Avenue to Success is a quotation specifically selected, with college students in mind, to help them stay motivated and focused on their goals. The quotations provide some guidelines to travel the maze of challenges and everyday experiences that life presents.

The quotations reflect six basic qualities or skills (Avenues) which one needs to succeed and find happiness:

Courage - Quality
Honor - Quality
Integrity - Quality
Leadership - Skill
Persistence - Quality
Personal Relationships - Skill

We also include other topics for personal development, for example: attitude, success, responsibility.

The Avenues are the roadways to success.

How come you don't include a comment with the quote?

I do not comment when posting here, or sending out the daily email because The reader is left to interpret the quote and how it may apply to him or her. It is amazing the occasional comment I receive that a particular quote was exactly what the subscriber needed.

The other reason, especially with the emails, is I try to keep them a fast read. There's a lot of email in the inbox, so I try to use relatively short, to the point, quotes.

Eventually, I hope to have this site provide links with more information about the authors.

Do you have to be affiliated with a college to subscribe?

You do not have to be in school, or even be affiliated with a college or university to receive the daily quotations.

Will Scripture or religious quotes be used?

Quotations of a religious nature will not be sent.

You have to agree people of various backgrounds use this service; and to interject a particular theological ideology would be out of place. Religion is very personal and should not be imposed on anyone. To avoid advancing a particular religious doctrine, we do not use scripture or sacred writings.

We will use quotations by theologians and people known for their spiritual beliefs. However, they will reflect one of the Avenues and not doctrine. Character is the foundation of living a happy, fulfilled live, and these writers have given us a wealth of advice to head.

An interesting commentary appeared in the March 30, 2006 Akron Beacon Journal, entitled  Jefferson' Announce Spirituality by Gregory Tomlin. The Beacon Journal attributes it to his master’s thesis addressing the concept of liberty in the lives and writings of Thomas Jefferson and John Leland. It first appeared in the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram.

Jefferson is often used as the benchmark for the “separation of church and state” argument. In this essay, Tomlin delves into the life events and thinking of Jefferson that formulated his thinking that there should be a wall separating government’s participation in church matters, but not prohibit the free expression of religion, especially its moral teaching applied to politics and government.

How long is a subscription good for?

Once a person is enrolled to receive Avenues to Success, the subscription is good as long as we have a valid email address for him/her.

An address can be changed at any time by emailing me a note. Usually, on the 17th of each month, there is a reminder that the address can be changed in the body of the message.

Do you send to school email addresses during summer brake?

We continue to send the daily inspirational messages using the college email address. Before the summer break, these students are sent a message to give them the option to give us an alternate address that they are using during the summer.

If the address is not changed, and we receive five consecutive server messages indicating a filled box, emails will be suspended until the start of the fall session. This will help the server by reducing the saved messages in a box that is not being used. It also reduces the risk of being classified as a spam mailing.

Students can permanently change their email address at this time, if they wish.

Where do you get your quotes?

As of this date, I've collected nearly 5,000 quotations to help my subscribers, and I'm happy to say that very few of them came from searching the web for quotations. There are some great sites that I do occasionally use, but mostly to find out some background information on the author.

I like to use quotes found in books and magazines I read. This lets me find words of wisdom in context and select them if I feel they would be of value to my daily Avenues. For example, take the quote:

"You cannot teach a man anything . . . You can only help him to discover it within himself."
     - Unknown.

I have it classified as a Leadership Avenue. What are the chances of finding it searching the various sites using "leadership?"

This is one of my favorite times of the year for new quotes. Commencement speeches offer a great source for advice to help the college student succeed as they enter the next phase of their life. The speaker will offer quotes that he's found for the occasion, but every so often he or she will have a gem of their own.

Looking for my inventory this way takes longer, but it is much more rewarding to me and the students and others Avenues to Success serves.

Who can enroll to receive Avenues to Success?

Anyone can enroll to receive Avenues to Success.

The primary market to benefit from the service is the college students. However, we realize the  quotations are also meaningfull to anyone interested in personal development, and we welcome them to join us.

Even though they may not be enrolling because of a particular sponsor, a subscriber can choose a listed sponsor or enter their own college choice to receive a portion of the subscription price.
